Rotary Club of Baguio Summer Capital

A Brief Historical Narrative

Straight out of the usual scenario – a roomful of active mindsets presenting, discussing, and debating plans, issues and concerns; a view of close to almost a hundred members all intermingling in the name of Rotary, and what-have-you”s – pretty much uncontrollable, and unavoidably chaotic!

It was said to be just a matter of time when finally twenty six (26) intrepid members of the then vast Rotary Club of Baguio North congregation would pre-destine themselves and renege their affiliations to the said organization.

Still up to their habitual fellowship and holding themselves up intermittently at the PSD Canteen of the University of Baguio, the ensuing months would find the group trifling with possibilities of their next move – from either forming their own service organization, or, to the by-now-overused “be fed to the Lions” solution – in the wake of uncertainties in regards autonomy; while occasionally still, preoccupying themselves with some socio-civic charities along the side, anonymously!

All told it was to be, until that fateful day of April 7th , 1999, when sponsorship for its prayer would be carried through the auspices of notable Rotarian-friends and then -  Club Presidents John Kim and Ely Refuerzo of the Rotary Clubs of La Trinidad and Baguio South, respectively.  And with able intercession of then 3790 District Governor Tony Angeles, the Rotary Club of Baguio Summer Capital was born, with its charter presented in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Related sisterhood ties were to be formed with Rotary Clubs of Southern La Union, Dolores, Pagbilao and Western Pampanga within the district; with the lone local Rotary Club of Cyber City Pasay outside 3790.  Two (2) other foreign partners complete the list – Rotary Clubs of Tokyo Rinkai, Japan and Paradise Valley of California, USA.

Likewise, from such humble beginnings and not to include the abbreviated stint of its Charter President Dr. Virgilio “Gil” C. Bautista, RCBSC prides itself of having produced fourteen (14) club presidents – all award winning and outstanding district functionaries in their respective times – relative to two (2) Assistant Governor for Cluster 1-C, and five (5) District Chairpersons.

Moreover, counting itself as the Highest TRF Contributor in the district in 2008-2009, with an all-time high donation of U.S. $ 37,100.00, and still able to host a multitude of district affairs, RCBSC today prides itself with another youthful member, Oyan Villanueva, installed as no other than the 2009-2010 District Governor of District 3790.  (Jal Martires)
